Ayabonga (right) is a very happy and cheerful little boy who loves spending time with the Zithulele therapists. He lives with his wonderful and caring granny who makes sure that he is always involved in household chores and activities. In this photograph he is seen with Sandi Tshemese, a translator for the Zithulele Hospital Rehab Centre.

A focus group for people with disabilities in rural South Africa.

Overwhelming response

As a precursor to the planning of the Rural Ability Programme, CBM’s partner and Zithulele Hospital Rehab Centre staff initiated a focus group for people with disabilities.   The response was overwhelming with 15 people from communities in and around Zithulele braving the wet and muddy terrain to attend.

The forum provided a safe and friendly environment for participants to communicate openly about their dreams, needs and fears and express their ideas about possible solutions to some of the challenges they experience.

Key issues that were raised included the need for supported schooling for children with disabilities and employment opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities.  Addressing both of these issues has been included in the Rural Ability Programme plans and we look forward to seeing some real change coming from their big dreams soon.
